Beterra Health

How Cuttlesoft helps Bettera Health improve engagement, safety, and patient care with data-driven technology.

The Challenge

Beterra is a small company with big ambitions. Serving healthcare organizations across eight countries, the demand for their technology was soon outpacing their capacity to deliver. In order to better serve their clients, they needed a scalable solution to support their in-house development team—and they needed it fast.

What we did

Cuttlesoft provided the strategic partnership Beterra needed to respond to client requirements with speed and agility—while freeing up the Beterra team to focus on long-term goals and priorities.

Small team, bigger dreams.

In the world of development, speed and agility are essential. But in 2017, Beterra was hitting a wall. The technology company was expanding fast—serving healthcare organizations in eight countries. But their small, in-house development team couldn’t keep pace with the increasing number of client demands and focus on new product innovations to drive revenue and growth.

If the team was prioritizing client requirements and ongoing maintenance, that meant new development opportunities had to go on the backburner. And if they focused on new tech development, they couldn’t meet ongoing client needs fast enough.

“The reality is you have to have the ability to rapidly respond to a clients’ needs,” Daniel Baily, President of Beterra explains. “And as a smaller company right now, it’s difficult to achieve what is needed in terms of developing technology without having a full and robust and complete engineering team that can watch out on all of these different facets.”

This meant the Beterra team was always putting out fires instead of building on their success for future strategic growth.

The team needed more hands on deck.

But recruiting, hiring and onboarding new developers takes time—and that’s one thing Beterra was short on. They needed a solution that could provide on-demand development support to fill the gap.

Not just a solution, but a partner

The search began for a company that could deliver essential development support as an integrated partner.

“We were looking for someone who would truly understand our business,” says Baily. “And rather than build a very transactional relationship, one that would be interested first and foremost on what's best for our organization and what's best for our clients…and work towards those aims.”

After casting a wide net and vetting over 20 companies, Cuttlesoft rose to the top of the list.

“It was going to be a big investment for our company,” says Baily. “So I wanted to make sure that we found an organization that was a good fit…Cuttlesoft was one that really resonated with us because they focused on what our company is trying to do in the world and the good that we're trying to create, rather than just shipping code.”

Kapil Nair, Beterra’s CEO agrees.

“I still remember the first time Frank [Valcarcel] and Mike [one of the lead engineers at Cuttlesoft] came down to visit us in our little office down in Georgia. I think the posture was very different. They didn't talk about their technology stack. They talked more about ‘What are you really trying to solve?’ And they have held that through over the years.”

And for Nair, Cuttlesoft’s personalized approach made all the difference. “Just their willingness to get on a plane and come see us. I mean, we are a very, very small shop. I think that matters a lot.”

It was that focus on long-term strategic partnership—combined with their outstanding technical capabilities—that set Cuttlesoft apart from the rest.

“Cuttlesoft is an outside partner, but we work with them as an inside partner,” says Baily. In other words, Cuttlesoft has become a virtual extension of Beterra’s in-house development team—operating as an integrated and trusted advisor that has become a core part of Beterra’s long-term scalability plan.

Bridging the gap with Cuttlesoft

The difference was almost immediate. Cuttlesoft’s team quickly got to work, expanding Beterra’s development capacity and nimbleness. With concerted effort and focus, Cuttlesoft shipped a new product within 12 weeks.

The product; ACT, gives healthcare teams a better approach to healthcare improvement.

Since then, Cuttlesoft has built three new products from scratch for Beterra in addition to providing ongoing design and development support—providing both the technical and strategic know-how Beterra needed to scale.

And Baily and Nair haven’t looked back.

Cuttlesoft has really helped us grow our capacity for technology development, but also enable us to do very discrete and targeted pieces of work that otherwise may just be put on the back burner or never accomplished,” says Baily.

"They delivered great code, but a lot of companies do that; where they really excelled was being a great partner."

Outcomes

Today, Beterra can quickly respond to urgent demands without sacrificing long-term priorities.

“We were much slower to build technology before our partnership with Cuttlesoft,” says Baily. “Now, we're able to build things that are on point and meet client needs—enabling us to increase the revenue that funds the growth of our business.”
